Doors open at 9pm. Tickets are $8 at the door.
Play us a song, show us your stand-up, read us a poem, perform in any genre you want! You get five minutes to show us one piece: Stun us, impress us, and make it count. So get down, sign up, and show us what you got!
The first 25 people to sign up are allowed 5 minutes on stage to perform. There is then a 5-slot waiting list for any extra time at the end of the show. Artists must bring their own music and props for their performances. The cafe offers a piano that can be used for performance acts.
Tuesday Night Latin Jazz with Chembo Corniel

If ever there was a musician that has paid his dues and quite possibly cried the blues it would be Conga master and all around percussionist Wilson “Chembo” Corniel. Chembo had the pleasure of working/touring and or recording with many artists such as Larry Harlow, Tito Puente, Machito, Celia Cruz, Grady Tate, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Willie Colon, Ray Vega and many more.
Latin Jazz Big Band Night featuring: The Bronx Conexion
(SECOND TUESDAY OF EVERY MONTH)
Admission: $10 general admission/$7 with Student ID at the door/$20 two tickets plus two drinks
The Bronx Conexión is a driving 20-piece Latin-Jazz Big Band led by drummer/ percussionist, Victor Rendón. The ensemble, with its home base at Lehman College, brings a group of veteran musicians with a wide variety of experience in the field. The Bronx Conexión keeps the tradition of Tito Puente, Machito, Mario Bauza, among others, with its own rendition of popular tunes as well as original compositions and arrangements by various members in the band.

La Familia Sextet's music is a perfect example of how the marriage of Afro-Caribbean rhythm and the harmonic structure and improvisational nature of jazz continues to remain fresh, exhilarating and timeless. Check them out as they perform at the Nuyo!
Wednesday Night Slam Open Mic (Every Wednesday Except the first Wednesday of the Month)
Doors open at 9pm. Tickets are $10 at the door.
All poets welcome. Come and perform your best poems, and compete for a chance to be invited back to our cafe for our Friday Night Poetry Slam! Take a chance, show us what you’ve got, wow the crowd with your words and leave them begging to hear more.
This Open Mic is strictly for Poetry. The first 20 people to sign up are allowed 3 minutes and 20 seconds to showcase a single poem. 3 randomly selected judges from the audience then rate the poems on a scale of 1 to 10. The 10 poets who score highest are invited to participate in the following round, where they recite a 2nd poem. The top-5 move on to the final round. The winner of the Wednesday Night Slam is awarded a small cash prize and a spot on the list for a Friday Night Slam.

ALL THAT! Hip Hop Poetry & Jazz night brings emcees, poets, musicians, and artists from a variety of backgrounds together for an open jam session. It’s a time in which all artists can come to discuss and perform openly, and have the opportunity to jam and see such amazing acts as Antonio Hart, Weldon Irvine, Erykah Badu, O.C., and Rahzel as well as many other emcees and performers all on the same stage! ALL THAT: Hip Hop Poetry & Jazz is one of our most diverse events where people from different backgrounds can share their love of poetry and music.
Open Mic participants are allowed to recite One Poem, One Verse, or One Song with the DJ. Participants are not permitted to bring musical accompaniment for performances or request to recite their work a cappella. Participants may be asked back on stage to perform another piece, depending on the volume of people signed up and amount of time remaining.

Come check out the Nuyorican's most popular weekly event! Watch professional poets perform and our Wednesday night Slam winners spit! Judges of our Friday Night Slams are 5 randomly chosen members of our audience (in other words, it could be you!).
PLEASE NOTE: Seating is granted as capacity allows. In order to be guaranteed admission, ticket-holding guests must be present at the venue by the time that doors open (9:30pm for VIPs and 10pm for General Admission). Priority is given to guests who have bought tickets in advance; once all ticket-holding guests have been seated, we will accommodate walk-up ticketbuyers as space permits. Guests who arrive after 10PM are admitted on a case-by-case basis, if space permits.

The Open Room gives audience members the opportunity to showcase their own poetry after listening to the poets featured at our Friday Night Slam.

Every first Saturday of the month Rome Neal’s Banana Puddin’ Jazz features amazing Jazz bands and vocalists followed by an open mic/jam session for Musicians & Poets. And as always, Mr. Neal’s delicious homemade banana pudding is complimentary for all.

We encourage young artists from everywhere to take this opportunity to showcase their work, mingle with other artists, and enjoy a live band and DJ. VERSES, hosted by “The Crazy One”, Helena D Lewis happens every last Saturday of each month. It’s a chance for all you poets, both young and old, to come and show your stuff, get a laugh and have a good time.
