DAYA ARTS Twin Rivers

Twin Rivers is a multidisciplinary production which explores the similarities between West African, West Indian, and Indian spirituality. Seamlessly incorporating dance, music, poetry, fashion, and visual art, this production focuses on the iconography and performance rituals associated with certain orishas in the Yoruba tradition and certain Hindu gods and goddesses.

SPICY WITCH  Life is But a Dream

Shawn Morgenlander has cleverly translated Pedro Calderón de la Barca’s fantastical Spanish Golden Age play La vida es sueño to English to be presented on the Spicy Witch stage. Rosaura sets out on a quest to Poland in order confront her ex-boyfriend. Along the way she discovers a dizzying array of estranged relatives, unfulfilled prophecies and struggles for succession. Merrily, Merrily Writer-in-Residence Iris Dauterman’s world premiere play, inspired by de la Barca’s La vida es sueño and set in a world of clinical diagnoses and medications, questions the separation between dreams and reality. Centered around a family struggling to reconnect despite prolonged estrangement, exploring the complexities of kinship, gratitude and forgiveness.

Nuyorican Poets Cafe Showcase

Over the last 40 years, the Nuyorican Poets Cafe has served as a home for groundbreaking works of poetry, music, theater and visual arts. A multicultural and multiarts institution, the Cafe gives voice to a diverse group of rising poets, actors, filmmakers and musicians. The Cafe champions the use of poetry, jazz, theater, hip-hop and spoken word as means of social empowerment for minority and underprivileged artists. Our community of spectators, artists and students is a reflection of New York City’s diverse population. This April the Café will curate and present 3 performances at The Clemente Center.
