Volunteers/Interns

We at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe are always on the lookout for motivated and energetic volunteers. As a multi-arts venue that presents hundreds of events each year, the Cafe offers opportunities for volunteers to gain experience in non-profit management and to help support a wide range of outstanding arts programs.

Those who are interested in short-term volunteer opportunities at the Nuyorican should email NuyoricanList@gmail.com or call 212-780-9386 to inquire about ushering at certain events; helping to promote the Nuyorican’s programs via emails, calls and flier/postcard distribution; assisting with our fundraising campaigns; cleaning and repainting parts of the Cafe; and other individual projects that arise from month to month.

The Cafe also offers ongoing internships for college or graduate students and early- or mid-career professionals who are interested in gaining arts management experience.

Internships are part-time and unpaid; they typically last for the equivalent of an academic quarter or semester. Interns have the opportunity to work in an informal but extremely active administrative environment, and to witness numerous performances, rehearsals and workshops at the Nuyorican.

We seek interns in the following categories:

Development intern:
This intern assists the Cafe staff in researching and pursuing new potential sources of contributed income, reaching out to past and current donors, preparing materials for grant applications and creating sponsorship proposals. This intern should have excellent writing, research and organizational skills.
Programming intern:
The programming intern helps to book events, scout artists, maintain and update the event calendar, and correspond with artists about load-in, contracts, payment and other logistical issues as needed. This intern should have some prior experience with programming, booking, event planning and/or artist management.
Publicity/Outreach intern:
This intern works with the staff and artists to prepare and disseminate periodic press releases and listings e-blasts for Cafe events; assists in handling publicity partnerships with other organizations (and occasionally with sponsors); and helps field press requests and arrange press events as needed. The Publicity/Outreach intern should have excellent writing and communication skills.
