VisualArts
In 1993, the Nuyorican Poets Cafe received an endowment for its Visual Arts Program from Agnes Gund, President Emeritus of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. This endowment made it possible for the Cafe to continue organizing cutting-edge visual art exhibitions by emerging artists. From its originally informal program, the Visual Artists Program was able to mount four to six exhibitions a year on the east and west walls of the Cafe and offer occasional lectures by the exhibiting artists. The concept of providing gallery space to, primarily, local Latino artists expanded to inviting artists from the Americas and the Caribbean Basin.
