THE NUYORICAN POETS CAFE’S ANNUAL BLOCK PARTY: Saturday, 10/1
Join the Nuyorican Poets Cafe for our annual Block Party on East 3rd Street! Enjoy some of NYC’s best poetry and hip hop, as well as food, games and rides for the whole family! Spoken word performances on two stages plus dance music from our celebrated DJs make this yearly tradition a neighborhood favorite! The Nuyorican Poets Cafe’s Block Party is a free event, open to New Yorkers of all ages; it will happen on Saturday, October 1st from 10AM to 6PM, outside the Cafe’s building on East 3rd Street (between Avenues B and C).
Since 1973, the Nuyorican Poets Cafe has served as a home for groundbreaking works of poetry, music, theater and visual arts. A multicultural institution, the Cafe champions the use of spoken word and music to empower underprivileged artists from diverse backgrounds. Allen Ginsberg called the Cafe “the most integrated place on the planet”, the Wall Street Journal says the Cafe is a “a thriving arts center” and John Leguizamo says the Cafe “put the street on stage.”
In the next several years, the Cafe’s East 3rd Street building will undergo a multi-million-dollar renovation. Thanks to support from the New York City Council, the Mayor’s Office, the Department of Cultural Affairs and the Manhattan Borough President, the Cafe will open two new event spaces on the upper floors of its building, greatly expanding its capacity to serve NYC students, artists and spectators.
