Growing Up Daddy, is the poignant, semi-autobiography of internationally acclaimed performer, and original Def Poet, Kraal "Kayo" Charles. Heavily influenced by early 90s New York City, with a clever fusion of hip-hop, Al Green and rhythmic poetry as it's soundtrack; Kayo entertains with the funny, movingly personal dilemma of a performer and aspiring artist, on the precipice of success who is suddenly saddled with impending fatherhood. Throughout the memoir style reminiscence; from stories of whimsical women and fair-weather friends, to the estrangement of his own quirky, Caribbean father, Kayo's wit and presence invites both laughter and commiseration. "a kind shot" is a funny, uplifting personal account that chronicles Terri Mateer's years as a professional basketball player, aspiring architect, and model. It's a 65 minute solo show that inspires us to be more generous and kind to every one. Seth Barrish, Co-Artistic Director of The Barrow Group, worked on the piece as a Dramaturg, it was listed by Ken Davenport as One of The Top Ten Shows to see at the FringeNYC-2014 and received the following quotes in a review by Robert Attenweiler at NY Theater Now:
"honest and affecting"
"'a kind shot' has real touch and scores with ease."
"Mateer is incredibly honest throughout her story and she tells it in a spontaneous, off-the-cuff manner that immediately makes the audience comfortable."
"Even through some of her most shocking confessions, Mateer is able to keep the tone light enough so that serious moments can quickly be followed up with humor and laughs."
