Since the inception of the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, music has been an integral part of our programming, particularly music rooted in the Afro-Cuban, Latin Jazz and Straight-Ahead Jazz traditions, as well as Hip Hop.

  • Chembo-Corniel Chembo Corniel (Every First Tuesday of the Month)

    Door $10, $7 w/ Student I.D

    If ever there was a musician that has paid his dues and quite possibly cried the blues it would be Conga master and all around percussionist Wilson “Chembo” Corniel. Chembo had the pleasure of working/touring and or recording with artists such as Larry Harlow, Tito Puente, Machito, Celia Cruz, Grady Tate, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Willie Colon, Ray Vega and many more.

  • Bronx Conxión Bronx Conxión (Every Second Tuesday of the Month)

    Door $10, $7 w/ Student I.D

    The Bronx Conexión is a driving 20-piece Latin-Jazz Big Band lead by drummer/ percussionist, Victor Rendón. The ensemble, with its home base at Lehman College, brings a group of veteran musicians with a wide variety of experience in the field. The Bronx Conexión keeps the tradition of Tito Puente, Machito, Mario Bauza, among others, with it’s own rendition of popular tunes as well as original compositions and arrangements by various members in the band.

  • Bobby SanabriaBobby Sanabria (Every Last Sunday of the Month between September to June)

    The last Sunday of every month Bobby Sanabria presents his New School Afro-Cuban Jazz Band. Sanabria is a professor of music at the New School, and the students that make up the band are the next generation in the music scene. Sanabria helps them keep the traditions of Afro-Cuban music alive, and they play the classic compositions of Chano Pozo, Tito Puente, Dizzy Gillespie and Mario Bauza.
    *Note: The Bobby Sanabria show runs during college class seasons.

Rome NealRome Neal presents “Banana Puddin’ Jazz” (Every First Saturday of the Month)

Every first Saturday of the month Rome Neal’s Banana Puddin’ Jazz features amazing Jazz bands and vocalists followed by an open mic/jam session for Musicians/Poets/Dancers.

And as always, Mr. Neal’s delicious homemade banana pudding is complimentary for all.
