| We talk about time as if it were "real", an object, or a measurement, such as a mile, but is it? Give me a moment, to elaborate ... So?, what did you give me? Do you still have it? Where is it? And yet it is real, as in years have gone by ... Perhaps language vests "reality" to what we imagine, and perhaps a language (any language, I think, I only know 2 _) defines what we perceive or imagine we do. Perhaps we combine different meanings into one term or word and let the recipient of our communication choose according to some agreed upon, or accepted rules. We use time as a measure of intervals (moment to moment, so to speak), We use time as a measure (a dimension) to establish standards of measurement along an axis of what? We talk about the past (which does not exist now), about the future (which may become now, or not) and about the present, which is always disappearing into the past. And we even imagine the possibility of traveling in it. Truly, language defines the parameters of perception, which allow us, well, to perceive it. By the time you read this, events will have taken place, that I (right now) see as immediate future. The Nuyorican Poets Cafe celebrates its 30th season of Art, with an event at the Town Hall (for further info see elsewhere in our web page). So is the Cafe 30 years old? I dont think so. It may be 30 years older, but it is still here. And all of the individuals that have come through here, have given it a distinct flavor (Thank You, each and everyone of you). But the Cafe of 30 years ago is not the same Cafe that celebrate 30 years now. It is part of its character. The ever changing face of the Cafe. As it should. Since its beginnings (I was the one in the corner, never saying much, just enjoying all of it) it was intended to emulate life: creative, expanding, adapting, communicating, procreating, Much as Art seeks to understand/explain Life by emulating it, it changes, adapts, renews or becomes a memory, a historical fact (if you will). So while it is nice to look back & celebrate, the Cafe continues to change, always urging all to be as Life: Art! And I will continue to explore where all this goes at some future undefined time in the next Our Nuyorican Thing Sam In the Service of Poetry, Art and Community Email responses and/or comments to: |
